First Impressions: Nisemonogatari

And we come to my favorite series of the season. Hoo yea.

Monogatari series fanboy mode engaged.

Doing the usual boyfriend-girlfriend thing

The waiting is over. The sequel to the famous adaptation of the Monogatari series, Bakemonogatari, is here - and Shaft is NOT skimping on any factor. Does it show?

Hell yes.

The soundtrack is the regular soundtrack used for Bakemonogatari. I like the OPs, especially OP2 (marshmallow justice by Eri Kitamura) - it's soft and the phrase is nice; just when I needed an intro that doesn't blare into my ears like a siren. The ED (Naisho no Hanashi by ClariS/supercell) is the collaboration that the fandom squealed over - and by virtue of being ClariS and supercell, the ED is already at a decent level. It hasn't grown on me yet, though, so don't hate if I don't praise it to the skies. Either way, having multiple decent openings and a solid ending is always a good way to start off a series and I hope Nisemonogatari unveils better songs as it progresses.

The graphics are splendid. Just splendid. I'd say it's the best of the season and it would take a lot for someone to beat it. It keeps the strong-line, flat-color style employed by Shaft and used in Bakemonogatari, but makes it so much shinier and cleaner. It's not like what Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon is where everyone's faces look like a brand-new layer of gloss were applied to them. It's just very...neat and appealing, while keeping that Bakamono look. I dunno. It's sort of the like the improvement the Ika Musume and Working!! series made from season 1 to 2. I've always liked the artful creativity of the Shaft graphics department as well as the graphic style in Bakemono, so two thumbs up here for Nisemono's art style.

Meet the sisters.

As for the plot, Nisemono depends heavily on the previous season Bakemono, so don't expect to understand much if you didn't see it. If you DID see season 1, then welcome to heaven. The second season follows the corresponding light novel strictly but also includes in the fanservice very, VERY nicely. From the loli-stalking of Mayoi to Kanbaru's house-cleanup, the characters are quickly introduced (and even better, lampshaded later) in turn and each are given a small place in moving the harem plot forward. The twin Araragi sisters, the foci of this story, are also shown in a great light. Since a lot of the initial episodes were introduction, I can't spoil much, but I can assure you that Shaft has definitely morphed the light novel into an adaptation that we can all enjoy for the active plot and the solid harem.

Sure, I may be a Bakemonogatari fanboy, but even without the reputation of season 1, Nisemonogatari is shaping up to be the best series of winter 2012. Get ready to see the unnatural and the impossible with Koyomi Arararagi yet again.

Status: Favorited.
