NO MORE SKYRIM REFERENCES PLZ

Zero no Tsukaima had potential.

Before season 3 started, of course.

I dunno, I just feel that ZnT would have been much better had it not wasted time for 4 seasons doing random 4-5 episode long miniarcs. Having a fantasy world requires...continuity, and simply adding characters and then doing random things doesn't add to that continuity. For instance, the inclusion of the elves would have been a crucial event had the elves actively worked for/against the good guys. But instead, they merely get swept to the sidelines after providing some tension as to whether Tiffania can stay with Saito or not.

That and 2 elves join the party. But shit, Saito's group already had enough nukers in the first place, so I don't see why the elves need to join.

I shouldn't be too grumpy. But seriously, even as a rather solid fan of the ZnT cast, I was tired of watching the same old crap get thrown over and over again, and for there to be just...no tension. There wasn't a single scene where I thought "man...he's gonna get screwed isn't he". Why is that? Because the cast gets back together so easily and so quickly that nobody has the time to panic.

The Ostland in full gear.

But to be quite honest, I'm complaining about the plot too much; and that is the jurisdiction of the light novel, which the adaptation has followed quite nicely. Then I'll just say it here: Zero no Tsukaima is a terribly mediocre light novel. There.

What could you have done to make it better, ExtraCareful?

Well...a lot of things. Think about it: Saito's friends control the top of the political chains in every major organization in Halkeginia (their continent). The light novel should have focused on the sociopolitical aspects instead of curbstomping every evil-looking dragon they find with a couple of flying ships that they call an armada + a jet fighter.

Some things that could have happened:
- Henrietta/Charlotte clash over Saito, and Charlotte's actions in Tristain cause tensions politically. Kidnappings and shit happens and you could make it into another "Helen-of-Troy" style story, except friends are on both sides.
- Some more harem-ish side-stories with everyone involved - INCLUDING Saito. I don't want just some yapping with Louise into yapping with Tiffania into yapping with Louise into marrying Louise bullshit. I want some real clash between the girls before Saito sweeps Louise away. From what it looks like, although all of the girls talk big in season 4, it seems that Saito just gave all of the other girls the cold shoulder and they just shrugged and accepted it. Not the best way to go...

Obviously some sacrifices could be made, but ZnT isn't that kind of series so I won't suggest killing off random characters.

Overall, I was very disappointed at how simply mediocre the ending was. It felt like a 4th season to tie all the knots together with one random boss battle, not a 4th season that would take things to a new tangent or a new level and climax to the conclusion. Even if you're a hardcore fan of ZnT, I would only suggest watching this for the flirting/fanservice. I should not have expected much from this series (although it's not like I really did in the first place...)

But an anime watcher can dream, can't he...?
