First Impressions: Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!

Here comes the second in the wave of Fall 2011 anime! And it certainly doesn't disappoint...despite how it looks.

Invincibility: A trait that every little brother should have.

When I saw Lerche's track record in the industry, I knew that I had a right to be piqued about this series. In addition to animating MajiKoi, this studio is also currently running Carnival Phantasm, the Type-Moon crossover craziness that I didn't think could actually translate over into an anime adaptation very well. Apparently MorningLescue says that the series has proven me wrong, and MajiKoi is no different.

I'll get the technical details out of the way first (just to keep things standard). Majikoi's OST is brazen, loud, and probably going to be added onto my playlist as soon as BakaBT releases a music collection torrent for it. It may help that the genre is a "comedy eroge", but nevertheless the series has a solid OP and a noticeable ED.

As for the graphics, what can I say? It looks like the visual novel and it doesn't distort the facial ratios as if the characters went through a playdough factory. MajiKoi is clean, simple, and provides an easy way to spread the eyecandy around. However, just because the series works on making the girls look good doesn't mean the action scenes are bad - they're definitely cool enough to go toe-to-toe against most series this year.

By the way, this robot is voiced by Jun Fukuyama, has the lightsaber (seen above), and has a finishing move called "Cookie Thunder". If that doesn't convince you I don't know what will

The way MajiKoi is directed, however, is what gives me thrills of joy. Essentially, Majikoi is split into some different parts, each one from the view of a couple of characters max. Each part tells a mini-story or paves the way for future development. This not only allows freedom of movement from one character to the next (allowing for wide-ranging cast development) but also lets Majikoi still do 1- or 2-episode mini-arcs from time to time. This way, I can transition from my fanservice to the plot without groaning at...well, the transitions.

Secondly, Majikoi just does it...right. It's as if someone heard my rant and made a series based on a VN that actually does what the original does. It doesn't pretend to be a twisted rom-com anime version of what the VN is. Majikoi simply has each girl being accidentally wooed into the harem each episode - which is fine with me. You see, I simply don't require hyper-realistic depth from a comedy eroge. And Majikoi delivers on what it should - the fanservice, the awesome girls, the not-retarded main lead, and enough funny stuff to boot. Furthermore, the action scenes are pretty good and add to the enjoyment of watching each episode. I mean, if any action scene that involves the move "Right Arm, Kawakami Sign: Frozen Wintry Death!" deserves respect. And that's just one aspect of these cool scenes.

Set one person's arm on fire and encase the other person's in ice in an epic action scene. Sounds like an average Majikoi episode.

Anyways, watch this series. It was what Hidan no Aria wanted to be but failed miserably at. Although I steeled myself for mediocrity, I was pleasantly surprised - and so will you.
