Yet for some reason, everything seems to meld together into a semi-coherent and rather decent series. Don't knock it 'till you've watched it. Here's YuruYuri.
I thought this was silly until I started to yell it out loud at completely random times. Then I realized that it all worked out.
The graphics are fine; they're designed towards being cute and round, but then again that's the whole "form fits function" thing. Dogakobo studios worked on Aria, Ghost in the Shell, and Hoshizora e Kakaru Hoshi. So believe me when I say that the graphics fit the anime well. I especially liked Akari's pigtail rockets. Little things like that are what makes this anime deliver.
The sound is also very good. All of the themes are peppy and I really like how they took the time to make a different theme for each character during intermission. The OP for this series is strangely very addictive and will probably be on one of my picks soon. It's ridiculously repetitive and silly, but you just can't help but sing out loud to it. So props for that.
How does this stand out from the rest of the pack? Well, enough to make me eat my harsh words before about how YuruYuri was nothing more than Saki without the mahjongg. This series was one of the few this season that made me actually feel happy inside. It's silly, sure, but not ridiculous, in the derogatory sense. Strange stuff happens, and the fanservice is lampshaded to no end. The characters don't change at all over time, but their backgrounds and their full personalities start to show up and that's good in and of themselves. I really like how they just said in essence, "here's a whole bunch of people, here's 1 or 2 things that each of them do, let's put them together in a small room and see how they would react/flesh out". By doing so they added in the new characters pretty neatly. No one group of any given main/supporting characters ever really felt out of place and each character's interaction with another character was unique and fun to watch.
Take a look at the book that Yui is holding. The comments section in YT had a field day with this.
From this moment on, I wanted to see this reaction from Akari EVERY TIME SHE LOOKED AT SOMETHING.

Do you hear that, Mr. Johnson? That is the sound of...inevitability.
But the combination of fanservice, lampshaded fanservice, the excellently placed humor and the little details all add up to make a series that I can laugh aloud at. The graphics are good enough to make the fanservice funny while still being cute enough to stop and take a look at, while the humor sort of cuts into your side like a blade when you're least expecting it. As for the details, I don't think even I've been able to see all the little Easter eggs that YuruYuri has lying around the episodes waiting for me. This series is not a masterpiece, but definitely does well in the places you don't think it would do very well in. If you're not TOO averse to fanservice (especially since they lampshade it quite nicely), then I definitely recommend watching YuruYuri. Have fun!

Why were you writing this at 4:54 in the morning instead of sleeping or watching Higurashi?
ReplyDeleteThis looks better than I would expect. Maybe will pick it up later.
