ExtraCareful's Soundtrack Pick of the Week

All right, it's Tuesday, and here's another piece!
Hero (Unofficial Single - Theme for Aoharu Magazine)
Supercell
Full version Eng/Jap Karaoke. Excellent.
Although supercell did make Kimi no Shiranai, they have only a few really good hits. I shouldn't rag on them too much since they're not really just yanking a shallow melody every month - their good-songs-to-overall-songs ratio is actually pretty high. I just wish they'd stop using Vocaloid on good melodies and use actual singers...because guess what? IT SOUNDS BAD. STOP IT. Especially the type of songs supercell makes, which requires a strong/husky/vibrant voice rather than the ability to just hit notes everywhere on the register. Most of their songs are low-ranged so it doesn't even matter.
Anyways, Hero definitely makes top 3 in their discography, easy. Unfortunately, I'm pretty biased right now since I've listened to Kimi no Shiranai a lot, but I would say that this song just barely tops the famous Bakemonogatari ED. Although Kimi no Shiranai and Hero have the same energetic build-up into sudden contrast (0:00~0:50) that is the trademark of this band, I would say Hero has better-sounding fillers than just the vocal+random drumming given to us by the former. Hero also has a much better conclusion from the main melody (0:51~1:25), edging out the ED from first place. I really like the original phrases and the double triplets at the end (1:19~1:22). In addition, this piece never decreases the momentum until everything is said and done, which is great. Hope you enjoy this song as much as I did.

  1. Again, digging up history here, but I just found blog so eh.

I wouldn't blame them for using Vocaloid so much. They didn't have a choice since before Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari, Ryo (the main composer + lyricist) couldn't find a singer, so he just went with Vocaloid. Kimi no Shiranai was supercell's first song that did not used Vocaloid. Nagi (the singer) stuck with them for a few songs. I'm pretty sure it's her singing Hero. I've never actually confirmed it, but the powerful vocal (if you can call it that) sounds a lot like her.

They don't use Vocaloid anymore. As far as I know it, Nagi went back to solo and they found two new singers, Koeda and Chelly. It'll be nice if they went back and redid old songs with real singers, though.
