More Early Looks: Spring Anime 2011

Well, to cover many of the remaining anime this season, light_rook and NotMoe will be looking at what we're following:

[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control: This anime probably takes the award for most promising first episode.
The story is based around Kimimaro, who just wants to comfortably live a normal life, and is working hard to get a civil service job, so that he can realize this want. He encounters a man who claims he can solve Kimimaro's financial issues, but takes his "future" as collateral. The plot is original, and has a lot of potential I want to see, but I really don't want this to turn into a battle anime, which the second episode is suggesting. I'm hoping this is going to handle battles scenes something like Code Geass did, and become something like Higashi no Eden. Since this is written by Takagi Noboru, I'm expecting something nice. On the "deeper" side it looks like it's going to focus on how Kimimaro handles his sudden wealth, and how it changes his character. The art is great, but some of the CG in "The Financial District'' is distracting. Also, it looks like we'll see more of the Devil/Contract theme from before.

It's Kuubei (from Madoka), All Grown Up.
This looks like it's compete for the title of best anime of the season with AnoHana (below). Right now it's losing to AnoHana, so let's look at that!

Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Boku-tachi wa Mada Shiranai: The second of the two Noitamina shows this season (and one with a decidedly long name), this is being produced by A-1 Pictures, who last season came out with the (somewhat disappointing) sci-fi adventure anime Fractale. However, this season it seems they've decided to focus less on the moe and more on the characterization, because Anohana has very well-defined, unique characters. The plot summaries generally don't tell enough about the story, and I'm not really spoiling anything by saying this, but the story revolves around a childhood friend who is already dead, and how her friends drifted apart soon after. The execution so far is excellent and this anime is currently my favorite this season; the only thing that bothers me is getting the full story in 11 episodes, but we'll see how that turns out.

Deadman Wonderland: This season's horror anime follows a boy put in a few pretty brutal opening scene: his friends are all killed and he's convicted as felon, sent to a prison that also serves as an amusement park. An odd setting, but one that manages to show a good deal of gore while also providing a rather chilling perspective. The manga was quite nice, but there's still room for the anime to be better. Manglobe is producing this, along with TWGOK this season, and so far this is slated to only get 12 episodes, but considering what they did with TWGOK it will probably get a second season. Even if the anime goes faster, I don't think the plot can be condensed into 12 eps ---the plot moved pretty quickly in the manga already. At this point, if the plot develops nicely this should turn out to be quite good. It looks like it's off to a good start.

Hanasaku Iroha: ... Honestly, I can't see why people like this anime. It has a unique setting, and mildly interesting characters, but right now there isn't a clear direction for the plot and the episodes have been more dull than I'd like. I understand that they're still introducing characters, but so far I've not been very interested in them, aside from Onoha. We can see how this will develop, but for right now I don't have a good impression of this anime.

Steins;Gate: Yes, you read the correctly. There is a semicolon in the name. This anime follows a wannabe physicist with severe social problems and a self-declared "supa haka" otaku stereotype, as they attempt to mess around with time travel, and they encounter an _actual_ physicist. Right now this show's only asset is the comedy. The fake techno-babble bullshit is just annoying, but it fits the character, because he really doesn't know any physics ...or it might just be HorribleSubs being Horrible. Really the only reason I'm following it is that it might get interesting with the time travel, but they haven't developed it very much after so far. So far it's just cheap comedy, but we'll see.
