Visual Novel Review: Harukoi Otome

Why so much autism, Japan?

Best girl is in another visual novel

I don't even understand. Why are story writers so bad? Why do they expect money for this kind of shit? It doesn't make sense.

Harukoi Otome is a visual novel by BaseSon (the same studio for Koihime Musou) set at a rich "Christian" school, previously all-girls, now some boys, you get the deal.

It's fucking horrible. I honestly don't think a Western professional writer would have thought up of this shit, especially looking at the indie media we have nowadays.

Why does this offend me more than, say, a regular shitty fanservice series? The same complaint - in trying to be serious and dramatic, the writers completely botch the realism. In the incest route, actual values related to family are all thrown out the window in the name of blind love. I'm going to spoil the game for everyone because you shouldn't be playing it in the first place: the sister of the main character is actually an impostor sister that replaced his real sister, and everybody around him has been in the know, The Truman Show-style. But he loves the girl anyways, so whatever.

That pretty much destroys the reason as to why people are piqued by incest as a genre in the first place!

Why the fuck would you care about incest as a genre if there weren't familial bonds involved? And if lack of trust such as this within the family can be so easily forgiven by "love", why the fuck is there a nice-happy-family-setting in the first place? Family isn't some bullshit Disney thing that we point to in the sky. It's based on absolute trust and acceptance, and the fact that the storyline casually throws in the fact that everyone lied to him just because is maddening.

And then every stranger is either annoying or an asshole. Can we - look. Look. Let's be honest here. This is not the 1800s. This is not the 1900s. We are past the point where we can make shitty fictional characters and expect to get away scot-free. So why is everyone either screaming at each other or shitting on the main character throughout the entirety of the game? It legitimately makes me angry when characters are just like "HEY FUCK YOU" and the only response is "..." Why are the antagonists in an arc/route so one-dimensional? Why do they act in ways that would get them rejected by any normal circle? Why there gotta be so much hate?

Lessons that should be learned from this game: if you can't write realistic interactions, don't write dramatic situations at all.

Score: 1/10

  1. Would it be safe to say that you preferred Boob Wars over this?

  2. Necro yeah whatever.... yer a d-bag..
The only reason for reading the Umi route is the expectation of famillial bonds... this is not a nukige dufus. it's a moege... sorry if yer incest-button got f'd up cuz it turns out it wasn't.. and as far as trust -- the dude was a mental-case before constructing the false-reality of his "sister"... he wasn't being deceived, he was being carefully dealt with... yer a dufus. low-IQ fricking dufus.
